2016

  • Jan 25: National IHR Focal Point for the United States of America notifies PAHO/WHO of the first laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika virus infection in St. Croix, one of the three main islands in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).
  • Feb 1: International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on Zika virus meets in Geneva.
  • Feb 1: World Health Organization declares Zika virus, "a public health emergency of international concern". This is the fourth time WHO has declared a public health emergency since the distinction was created in 2007.

2015

  • Massive outbreak of Zika virus in Americas. Brazil is the most affected country with preliminary estimates of 440,000 to 1.3 million cases of Zika virus infections through December 2015
  • May 2015: First case of Zika virus in Brazil reported
  • May 2015: WHO’s Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) has been working closely with affected countries since May 2015
  • May 7: The Pan American Health Organization issues an Epidemiological Alert for Zika in northeast Brazil.
  • Nov 17: Brazil’s Ministry of Health reports possible association of microcephaly with Zika virus infection during pregnancy.

2013

  • Zika virus outbreak reported in French Polynesia, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, and Easter Island

2007

  • Zika virus outbreak in Yap Island of Micronesia

1977-78

  • Zika virus is detected in Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia

1947

  • Apr 18: Researchers who are studying yellow fever virus found a rhesus monkey that researchers identified as 766 ran a fever of 39.7°C, about 2°C higher than normal. The monkey was said to have Zika virus.
