Zika virus in Chile
Chile is a South American country. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south.
On 2 February 2016, the first three cases of Zika virus in Chile were confirmed by the Chilean health officials. All of the infected patients contracted with Zika virus while traveling elsewhere in Latin America. A 28-year-old man was infected while traveling in Colombia, a 28-year-old man contracted the virus in Venezuela and a 35-year-old man got the virus in Brazil. Chilean acting Health Minister Gisela Alarcon said that there is no risk for population, since continental Chile does not have the mosquito that transmits the disease.
Easter Island
Easter Island is 3,700 km away from Chilean mainland. It had 173 Zika cases in 2014. All of the cases are mild and no pregnant women got the virus.
